Sweetgrass
Here’s a project that is just stirring, an idea, a hope, a dream: Sweetgrass weavers in the South Carolina Lowcountry carry on a tradition of the Gullah-Geechee people that is centuries old. Increasingly, because of overdevelopment and environmental stresses, the materials needed to weave baskets is becoming more and more difficult to obtain. A group of musicians, poets, artists and concerned citizens are organizing to advocate for the weavers’ efforts to create sustainable conditions for their work and artistry. Look for events and happenings on the horizon!
