Restoring the music of Edmund Thornton Jenkins
My hometown of Charleston South Carolina has a rich and varied musical past, but some of it has remained unknown for too long. A number of restorers, among them Vincent Plush and Tuffus Zimbabwe, have helped to rescue the music of Edmund Thornton Jenkins (1894-1926), and I am lucky to count myself among them. I was invited by Nigel Redden and the Spoleto Festival USA to create a cabaret version of his operetta “Afram” in 2016, and in 2023 conductor Kellen Gray premiered an orchestra suite I arranged at the Louisiana Philharmonic. There is more Jenkins music; we’ll see what comes next.
